Entwined in a happy apprenticeship thatpromotes independence and practicality, outback children experience both the joy andhardship that station life brings. From the never-ending delight of a newborn animal tothe cruel death of stock in drought, these children witness life at its grass roots.
Their unique lifestyle is not without its challenges. Many children do school by Distance Education where Mum is the teacher and classmates are spread over thousands of kilometres and they regard the Royal Flying Doctor Service as their “local” doctor.
A Child’s Life on the Station is a collection of photographic images captured by parents and friends. These images provide a valuable insight into the rich and distinctive lifestyle of outback children and personify the fabric of the Australian character.
A Child’s Life on A Station Exhibition

If you are interested in helping to put up Gallery Displays or to help take them down please let us know as we would appreciate any time you can spare.

Location: Coalface Art Gallery
From: March 7th

Till: March 30th.
Gallery open during Council hours Monday to Friday and Market Sundays from 9am to 12noon.

Working Bee

A big thank you to everyone involved in giving the Arts Council Building a much needed clean out for the new year.

Lets show Moranbah what we can do!

After the success of the Moranbah Arts Council (MAC) 2007 performance: "Out of Sight, Out of Murder", the MAC has noticed a real desire in the community to watch local talent. To satisfy this, MAC is offering it's support for talented people who would like to share their love of performing with the Moranbah community.

MAC is looking for short plays to be produced and performed, play could be any genre and performances could encompass the outdoor/indoor lifestyle of Moranbah (e.g.: Shakespeare in Town Square or a Who Dunnit at the Pub). MAC would support productions and offer assistance but performances would have to be completed by the individuals.

This is a great opportunity to show case your talent or if you're looking for a career in the industry, this would look great on your resume.

So, budding producers, directors and actors, lets show Moranbah what we can do!

Walking by Apple Tree Creek

Written by Ian Brown
A La Boite Theatre Company Production
Directed by Sean Mee

Join two grey nomads, Del (Penny Everingham) and Stan (Bob Newman) on their great Australian dream of selling the house, buying a mobile home and hitting the road. The Moranbah Arts Council has once again delighted its’ audiences with their latest theatrical production, Out of Sight, Out of Murder written by Fred Carmichael. The production opened last Friday night at the Community Centre, with an audience of 70 enjoying this humorous murder-mystery. This fabulous local production was equally well-attended at its’ Saturday night performance.

Bob Grieve is wonderful in the lead role as the somewhat confused, sometimes inept but endearing author Peter Knight, who is struggling to write a best-selling murder mystery. He soon learns that all is not right in the gloomy old house, as his imaginary characters come to life after a freak storm. Minna, the housekeeper, played superbly by Amanda Raymond, is the only other ‘real-life’ character and she brings plenty of laughs and ‘local’ charm to the production.

Each imaginary, stock character brings their stereotypical personalities into the house. Heather Sinclair sparkles as Lydia, the gold-digging wife of unscrupulous lawyer, Jordan Dillingham, played handsomely by newcomer Chris Percy. Fiona Branch is breathtakingly sweet and naïve as the lovable heroine, Kay. The dashing hero, Dick Stanton is played by Darryl Finlay, a very talented find for the local theatre scene. Kim Brett is marvellous as Fiona, the old character lady (with apologies to all Fiona’s!!). Chiz Ruxton and Louise Wood provide entertainment and laughs in their respective roles as Cogburn (the quintessential butler) and Addie (the always-pregnant, sexy, young maid which Louise plays to absolute perfection!)

The final showing of this play will be Friday August 24, commencing at 7.30pm. Bookings are essential as there is limited seating and can be made at the Community Centre. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for QAC members and students.

Flickr site updated!

The Flickr site has been updated with pictures of the Fantastic artworks that have been created for the African Childrens Choir. Anyone wishing to display arts and crafts work or other exhibitions in the gallery can do so at the council reception where there is a list of those displays currently booked in. You can also contact Lynley Paine, (ph49417060) who oversees the gallery on behalf of the council.

It is a big space to fill so sometimes it is better to team up with some other people to book a slot. Small displays can also be put out at the same time as something already booked in, so ring Lynley to discuss options. We prefer exhibitions are up for at least a month so people get a good chance to see them. Plenty of warning of cancellations is needed as it isn’t always easy to find a replacement at short notice and an empty gallery is not a great look!

Current bookings are:

16th July-17th Aug Arts Council’s “Hoon”

20th Aug – 13th Sept – recent cancellation – an urgent booking welcomed!!!!

13th Sept – 12th Oct Moranbah State High School’s annual ‘arts’ display

15th Oct – 23rd Nov Gentle Craft Club “Round Robin Quilts” and display.

Coming Events

July Wed 18th – .African Children’s Choir at the Town Square. You haven't lived untill you've seen "Staying Alive" (by the Bee Gee's) performed in the style of "Bollywood"!

We have had two very productive workshops which have taken place at the Moranbah State Preschool which has been a wonderful creative area to spread out and make the back drops for the African children’s Choir. Jill Nixon has been amazing and come up with some great African based ideas with Wanda Bennett (textile artist and teacher).
We couldn't’t have done this without the support of the
following local people:

Jill Nixon, Wanda Bennett, Fiona & Ross Branch, Eva Davis, Deb Moloney, Barb Giles, Anne O’Leary, Lynnie Busk & Granddaughter, Marg Laughton, Natascha & Bob Grieve, Sonia Widderick & The Anglican Church

We couldn't, have done anything at all without the following funding and support from:

BHPBilliton, Belyando Shire Council, BMA, Queensland Arts Council, Australian Government Australia Council For The Arts and the Moranbah State School.

Meetings

The Moranbah Arts Council Meetings are held at the Arts Council Gallery Building and the Gentle Craft Club building off Bacon St, behind the Youth Centre on the First Tuesday of every month at 7:30pm.
